Cellulite Isn’t a Fat Issue — It Starts in the Fascia

The biggest misconception I correct in almost every consultation is the idea that cellulite comes from having “too much fat.”


Cellulite can appear on a size 6 body, a size 20 body, athletes, mums, teenagers, peri-menopausal women... it truly does not discriminate.


Beneath your skin sits a layer of fascia, a web like connective tissue that helps everything glide smoothly. When that fascia becomes tight, dehydrated, rigid, or tethered, it pulls downward on the skin. At the same time, fat cells naturally push upward.


That tension mismatch (not the fat itself) is what creates dimples, waves, and uneven texture.


You can lose weight and still have cellulite. You can gain weight and not develop cellulite. It all comes back to the condition of your fascia and how it interacts with the layers beneath your skin.


When fascia is healthy, cushioned, and flexible, the skin looks smoother. When fascia is restricted, stiff, or stuck, the dimpling becomes more visible.


This is exactly why cellulite treatments must target more than one component - not simply fat cells on their own.


What Actually Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite is a multi-factor condition. It forms due to a combination of structural, hormonal, and genetic influences. Most of which you cannot control.


Here are the biggest contributors:


Genetics

Your DNA determines your collagen density, skin thickness, fascia structure, and how your body stores fat. If your family has cellulite, you likely will too.


Hormones

Oestrogen plays a huge role in circulation, collagen production, fluid retention, and skin strength. Hormonal shifts during puberty, pregnancy, and peri-menopause often make cellulite more pronounced.


Fascia Tightness & Adhesions

This is the key factor. Fascia becomes tight due to:

  • prolonged sitting

  • dehydration

  • stress

  • inflammation

  • injuries

  • reduced mobility

  • poor circulation

When fascia loses flexibility, it tethers the skin downward and creates tension-based dimples.


Circulation & Lymphatic Flow

Poor circulation leads to tissue stagnation. Poor lymphatic drainage increases fluid retention. Both make cellulite appear deeper.


Collagen + Skin Quality

As collagen naturally declines with age, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic. This makes the structural patterns beneath the skin more visible.


Lifestyle

Before we even talk treatment, we must establish your cellulite grade. This is the first thing I assess during a cellulite consultation because your grade determines which modalities will give you the best results.


Grade 1:

Visible only when the skin is pinched or when sitting down.


Grade 2:

Dimples visible when standing.



Grade 3:

Dimples visible when standing and sitting / lying down.

How Proper Grading Determines the Right Treatment Approach

Different cellulite grades require different treatment methods. Here’s how we tailor treatment based on your grade:


Grade 1

Our goal here is to empty the fat contents, improve fascia flexibility and boost circulation. This grade requires a blend of the following treatments:


Grade 2

Our goal here is to target early tethering, stimulate collagen in the skin, increase tissue mobility. This grade requires a blend of the following treatments:

Grade 3

Our goal here is to release deep tension, empty out the fat contents, rebuild collagen, restore circulation, smooth surface texture. These plans use multi-modality layering with a blend between grade 1 and 2 treatment methods.


Each plan is designed around your body, your grade, and how your tissue responds from week to week.


There is no “one size fits all” cellulite treatment and if someone offers you one, that’s your sign to walk away.


How Many Sessions Will You Need?

This is where a consultation and transparency matters. Because cellulite is structural, not superficial, the body needs time to remodel collagen and release fascia.


Typical expectations:

  • Grade 1: 3–6 sessions

  • Grade 2: 6–12 sessions

  • Grade 3: 12+ sessions, often with maintenance


And of course individual results and sessions will always vary.
